Reading 091- New experience

Read Aloud Project Report

1.     What was the age and relationship of your reading partner to you? What did you read to them? Describe the typical meeting: Where did you read, when, how long?

The age of my partners was 11, and I hadn’t known them before we became reading partner in this project. During the project, I've met them every Tuesday and Thursday for 25 minutes each session at a library in CGCC.

2.     How did your relationship change as you went along? What did you learn about that person that you didn't already know? Has your Partner's attitude toward reading changed?

My relationship with my partner was closer every time we met. We’re like friends to each other. Spending 25 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday for 2 weeks with my partners was not a very long time, but it was long enough for us to know each other. Each day, we felt more openly to share with each other about our dreams, families, hobbies and even childhood memory. For example, Nyla was comfortable sharing with us how her mother used to force her to study spelling and vocabulary when she was 6. Nyla is a Vietnamese – American girl. She was born in the US, but her parents are Vietnamese.  When she was little, they only spoke Vietnamese to her, and she didn’t attend pre-school. Therefore, when she went to elementary school, she was behind other students in class. Her mother was trying really hard to help her, even forcing her with a stick so that she could be better. Even though I was spending only two weeks with them, it was my pleasure to see some of them begin to read bigger and thicker books.

3.     What did you learn about yourself that you didn't already know? How has your attitude changed toward reading, especially reading aloud?

One thing that I could learn about myself during this project was that I could do anything. As a foreign student, I have had many problems about my accent during this project; therefore, I tried lots of effort to work this out. I practiced reading aloud every night before each meeting with my partners. There were tons of pressures in my head. However, Art, my teaching partner, was helping me a lot. He encouraged me and helped me out when I need him. So thanks to him and the kids who were also helping me during the project by listening, now I can enjoy reading, especially reading aloud and complete this project successfully.

4.     What was the best thing you experienced about this Read Aloud Project?

The best thing I experienced about this project is not only that I could find a better way to learn material in my text book by teaching my partners what I had learned to them, but also because I could have a chance to work with these amazing kids, to share their dreams, and to help them to be more determinate to achieve their goals.

5.     What surprised you about this project?

At the beginning of the project, I didn’t expect to receive anything from these kids. I just wanted to help them and hope that all the knowledge that I taught may be useful to them in the future. However, at the end of the project, those gifts that they gave make me so surprise. I didn't want them to leave.

6.     Explain why you will or will not read aloud again.

There are lots of difficulties that I have been during this project like finding picture books, preparing lesson plan, practice reading aloud, and confusion; however, I still want to attend this project again because this project gives me an opportunity to meet , work, and have wonderful experiences with kids.
