First meeting (6/14/11)

·         What you read: Noisy Nora.

·         How did the session go for you both? I was nervous because she is my first student. But then, it became a surprise when I knew that her parents are Vietnamese which mean that we have the same origin, and many commons. The session was going well since the book that I chose was pretty easy. Nyla is very smart so she got all the material very quickly. I’m so proud of her.

·         How did the session go for you both? It wasn’t very good. I guessed because I gave him too much things to learn, but at least I taught him the entire lesson.

  • How did the session go for you both? Raymond was my third student so everything was much easier than the first one. Raymond got some difficulties with my lesson which was modes of organization. I think it’s normal because the material is kind of hard for 6th grade student.

   .    How did the session go for you both? I didn’t do a good job this time so it took us a while to get through all the material.

Second meeting (6/16/11)

·         What you read: Sam and the Tigers.

·         How did the session go for you both? We had a good time together. Nyla got everything so fast that we had may time left before the next group. So Art and I talked to her about her dream, which is becoming a writer. We were so glad for her, and we also give her some comments about her dream so that she can be more determinate. This activity is part of the lesson in my text book which named getting handle in college so Art and I were very happy to help her to have more motivations to achieve her goals.

·         What you read: Sam and the Tigers.

·         How did the session go for you both? This was my first time with Carlos but it was just about 10 minutes so I couldn’t finish the book for him. However, we were having fun with the book’s content.

·         What you read: Sam and the Tigers.

·         How did the session go for you both? The material this time was more appropriate to Raymond; therefore, I was able to finish everything before time was up. Then we talked to him for the rest of the time so that we could know each other better.

·         How did the session go for you both? This time was better than before. Rosy was able to recognize the author’s purpose very quick so we had a little time to talk with each other.

Third meeting (6/21/11)

  • What you read: Angelina Ballerina.
  • How did the session go for you both? Today was good. We got no problem to help her identify the difference between simile, metaphor and personification. Nyla loved the book that I read for her, and she also shared some of her poems with us.


Required Session #2 (5 points): Carlos

  • What you read: Sam and the Tigers.
  • How did the session go for you both? Last time we didn’t have a chance to finish the book so we decided to finish it today. In fact, this book has a lot of example about simile; therefore, Carlos had no problem with the lesson.

  • What you read: Athur tricks the tooth fairy.
  • How did the session go for you both? I brought a chart which summarizes the entire lesson that I had to teach him. The chart was very useful for me and Raymond. Therefore, after reading the book which I let him choose to read last time and finish the lesson, we were able to read another story for him.

  • What you read: Angelina Ballerina.
  • How did the session go for you both? I was trying to get Rosy attention but it felt like something was wrong. Rosy was a smart girl. She could learn everything very quick, but I think that she didn’t have fun while studying with me.

Last meeting (6/23/11)

What you read: Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
How did the session go for you both? This was our last day so we bring lot of candy and cookies. My partner and I were very happy when Nyla gave us little kites that she made for us. It was something that we never thought that we would receive from her.

What you read: Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
How did the session go for you both? Carlos is very special. He is a smart boy; however, I’ve hardly ever seen him not focus on my lesson. This time was also the same; except, my accent caused some difficulties to him to understand.

How did the session go for you both? Like the other days, Raymond got everything before time was up so I chose some other stories to read for him. Then we talk for a little bit because that was our last meeting. We had a lot of fun before he left.

How did the session go for you both? Even though Rosy was not as good as the other kids, she worked so hard to improve herself. The session was going smoothly and a little bit emotionally when I got a card from her. I was a very special day for both of us.
